The premier attraction at Hanmer Springs is the outstanding Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, judged BEST VISITOR ATTRACTION in the New Zealand Tourism Awards three years running; 2004, 2005 and 2006, and awarded the Best Natural Bathing Spa at the inaugural Australasia Spa Association’s Spas of Excellence Awards, 2008.
Discovered by Europeans in the late 1800’s, but already long known to local Maori, the Springs have grown from early beginnings as a health spa to be an attraction that draws more than 500,000 visitors from all around the world each year.
The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa complex has grown from its original beginnings as a simple tin shed to include outdoor rock pools and sulphur pools, indoor private thermal pools, a large heated outdoor pool, all set in beautiful landscaping featuring native plants. For the kids, there’s a family area with three hydroslides, waterfalls, a picnic area and a café.
The Spa offers luxurious massage, skin and body treatments by trained therapists. The $2.5 million dollar purpose-built spa was opened in 2007 and has won local and international awards.
